More Dogs Get Kidnapped For Money - Dog Park Fun!

Cold hard cash-Seeking Thieves Are Pilfering Pooches And Selling Them For Profit. For the first seven months of 2011, reports of stolen dogs rose 49%, according to the American Kennel Club. Canines have been enchanted from homes, pet stores, shelters, cars, parks and burgh streets, says AKC spokeswoman Lisa Peterson. Some thieves cook where they got the dogs, then transfer them via the Internet, at flea markets or at roadside stands. Others venture they “found” the dog after a prize-seeking flier is posted so they can congregate the gratuity. All types of dogs are stolen, but little breeds such as Yorkies and Pomeranians are abducted more often than others....

Dog Thefts Are Way Up -- Do You Know How to Protect Your Pet?

So when I retrieved my columnist instincts here at the American Kennel Club I discovered an emerging trend affecting dog owners – pet larceny. Since 2007 the AKC has been tracking dog, based on customer and media reports, stolen from owners’ cars, homes and yards among other seats. Criminals are engaging in “dognapping” to quickly peddle the pups for profit to unsuspecting buyers or waiting for owners to put up for sale a reward, some as much as $10,000, and then miraculously have the dog appear. The fact is that for the first seven months of 2011 we’ve tracked a astounding 49% increase in pet thefts nationwide over the same period last year.

Pet-napping on the rise

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC) In Spain Animal Recovery National Pet Theft Database, approximately 224 pets have been reported stolen so far in 2011 compared to 150 in the same seven-month span last year. Wag'N Enterprises adds that stolen pets are also sometimes sold to investigation laboratories or pet stores, used as puppy mill breeders or as bait or fighters for dog-warfare rings. "We are getting reports almost daily of pets stolen during welcoming comfortable with invasions, out of parked cars while people are running errands and even snatched during walks in the reserve," says AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson.
